My speakers work, but there's no sound.

We think there might be something stuck in the headphone jack because when we try to plug in head phones they wont go in all the way. We tried to get whatever it is out (turning off the computer and sticking in a paper clip trying to pull it out), but we can't. So, how do I get it out? If I can't, what should I do?
