Keyboard types wrong characters

Hello,

I have a new laptop that types the wrong characters when the shift key is pressed. A few of them are correct -- exclamation point, for example -- but all the others are wrong. The apostrophe comes up as an ampersand, for example. I have double checked the keyboard setting many times and it is set to US, which is what I want, and number lock etc is not on. Help!

Did you buy this computer in Japan? I suspect it's modified in some way for the local market.

I did. I just cant figure out what that modification is. Thanks for your comment.

I had a problem with keyboard typing wrong letters in outlook only. Checked that languages were set correctly and also then clicked on outlook icon itself (top left) and clicked restore and all fine again. Not sure whcih worked.
