Hello,
The force exercised on the jack mount when it snapped damaged the receptacle. That is the piece that requires to be replaced for it is sort of an automatic switch, that turn on and off your external speakers.
The isssue is not with Windows as you posted but with hardware.

I don't think that is right because I have two headphone jacks and the other one still works fine, but the comp always thinks there is a set of headphones plugged in.

You have just confirmed my diagnotic. Even when you use the good jack, the computer "thinks" that there is headphone, hence that means that jack socket has been damaged.
