Need to Restore Sound Closed

Hello, 

i had sound coming from my laptop just fine until i accidentally put it on standby. when i brought it back from standby, i now get no sound. i tuned the volume all the way up and check the volume on the videos on sites like youtube but nothing. what did i do or better what can i do to restore sound?

Configuration: Windows XP / Internet Explorer 8.0
