How can I get to command prompt without windo

Hello, I have an HP with Windows XP. I have tried to boot it in Safe, Normal, Safe with command prompt, etc. Instead of booting I get blue screen that says windows was shut down in order not to damage computer. I can't find my XP CD or disk. I'd like to do CHKDSK, but can't get far enough to get to command prompt. Anybody have any ideas??? I need help! Thanks

Dear Renée,
When you get the famous blue screen of death, could you please tell me the error code. It is a 10 character code beginning with 0x.
Also, please tell me what was done to the computer before the problem occured.
