Lesk,
Using your search tool, all files, type driver and search. Through the list, see if you can find the audio card"s install shield.
If you can't find it, let me know and I will seek jack4all advice, he is our one of a kind wizard on hardware matters

Hello pcsces and lesk,
Pcsces, I would have given the same link as you but I understand lesk's concern.
I rarely do what I am about to do. I got the direct download link from French Kioskea (commecamarche)
Don't worry lesk if you get a few words in French, it always romantic.

Hello Lesk
Sorry, I was not aware that it was shareware. I should not have given that link, my mistake.
I looked around and I could not find your driver. The last time that C Media made an update for the Ac97 card seems to be in 2006.

Oh ok thanks for your help anyway - all was OK until i installed avg and then the speaker icon vanished then no sound. What do you suggest? I cannot get a new sound card as the audio is built into the mother board i believe.

Hi Lesk,
Strange that the installation of an antivirus would do that.
Please go to your device manager and locate your sound card. See if has an X on it.
My suggestion is that you delete the card and reboot. XP should detect it as a new device installed. Then install the driver which you have in the system

I know this is why i have been left confused - There is no x but a ! within a yellow circle next to the audio driver. Uninstalled the driver previously, xp detects it and still there is the yellow exclamation mark. Confused.......

Hello,
Follow the instructions from step 6. When it ask you to create an account, then fill the details and
validate the account. After validation, start from step 6. No need to pay. Just create an account as
a free user. When it comes to download option you will be getting the option "Continue - Free DriverMax user".
Good Luck.
