For a Vista PC I would try this:
click Start - select "Control Panel" - select "view network status" and then select "Diagnose and Repair"
Good Luck

Open command prompt (cmd.exe), type following command and show us the result. If it shows IP address, subnet mask, gateway and DNS servers info, try to ping the gateway IP address, it should work if it's connected properly.
ipconfig /all
If you are able to ping gateway IP address. You can also use nslookup to try resolving domain name. If it fails to resolve domain name, you can test to configure following free DNS servers provided by Google, after that try again.
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4
Hope this helps.
