To recover system files:
1. Have your Windows XP product key handy and insert your XP install CD in the drive..
2. Open a Command Prompt window (under Start/Accessories).
3. Type SFC /PURGECACHE and press [Enter]. This should complete within one minute.
4. Type SFC /SCANNOW and press [Enter]. This will scan your system and replace any modified or missing system files.
5. Once the previous command finishes, reboot. You may be asked for your product key and/or to re-activate XP, but your XP installation will be intact, as long as there is no malware on your PC.
