Explorer will not open to internet use

Hello,
When I try to open my internet explorer a flash appears on the screen but no page. I have access to internet thru our lap top, so I know my cable connection is not the problem. Is there a way to get in so I can load Modzilla firefox as my internet passage? Thanks in advance for any assistance you can give.

Download Firefox to a flash drive on the laptop and install it from that drive on the desktop.
