So I had my HP with the broken display working fine through my TV with the VGA cable and I was on my way retrieving my pics data etc and I decided I wanted to adjust the screen resolution settings and blink, screen went dark and I have not been able to restart the feed from the HP since. Why oh why did I have to go messing with an already precarious situation. I guess I'll try the recommended fix mentioned here, I can only hope. If anyone has any other ideas please let me know, thanks.

If you boot the laptop into "safe Mode" (hit F8 multiple times during the boot) it should use a safe 640X480 resolution. Then you might be able to set the resolution to something your external monitor can handle.
Good Luck
