Hello,
I have used my external monitor before but have forgotten how to use it. I used to be able to slide the screen over to the other monitor but it does not go there now.

You have two options when using an external monitor:
1. clone the laptop screen to the external screen
2. extend the laptop screen to the external screen
It sounds like you want #2. Most modern laptops use an Intel chipset - you can normally find an Intel icon in the Control Panel where you can select options for the external monitor.
Good Luck
