Help laptop will not charge or turn on even after purchasing new

Hello,
Hi I am new to this forum and not very computer savy . Here's my issue I have a gateway laptop used mostly for enjoyment I purchased anew battery pack and charger through amazon . I figured that was the problem is I d I waited a week till I got it plugged in started to work and then stopped I don't know if there is a short where you plug in to the prongs. I asked my son who is taking it he took it apart and din't see anything with the prong. I tried what tic tactoe said unplugged it took battery out pressed start nothing just red light.showing its dead. The problem is I did not back up some of the things mainly some pics what can I do ? If I can't get power how do I back up ahard drive?
