Hello,
I have the same problem. My issue though is that added to the unmountable boot volume I cannot get the labptop (Dell Lattitude D420) to boot by the CD or do anything other than give me the error message or just continue to cyle into a reboot - never getting to anywhere I can type anything. I have done all the function keys changing the boot sequence to the CD but then another error shows "No bootable device". I also did a diagnostic that gave an error of 0146.
I brought this to a local place for the exact same issue a couple months ago. I need to get work done tonight and seeing if there is a fix.
Thanks for the help.

You have a dead hard drive. You will need to replace the hard drive and reinstall Windows. The same error happened to my D420. But, in my case the drive was still readable and I backed up my data. I had a Norton Ghost image that allowed me to restore all my applications. Those 1.8 inch drives are all pieces of junk. Good Luck
