I have a dell mini 1018 and it takes too long to start.Once its on am unable to log in as the caps lock sign says its on.Have tried unlocking the key but doesn't seem to work, now am unable to log in ...please help!!
Run Dell 32-bit Diagnostics on the computer. Click here to find steps on how to run Dell 32-bit Diagnostics. This will isolate the problem as Hardware or Software. If the Diagnostics returns any error code(s), please add the same in your reply.

Hi,
Run the diagnostics on the laptop but says no error found.I am still unable to log in.On the login tab where am supposed to put my password,it says the caps lock is on,am trying to disable this but to no avail.I can type in on the space but its only caps on,so i cant access!!
Thank you jack4rall,followed your recommendations and viola am in..but now do i have to do that all the time am trying to login or is there a permanet solution. What could have caused the problem in the first place?
Thank you jack4rall, you identified the point of failure indeed.
@ marrisa2013 there could be an actual issue with the keyboard, to isolate try using an external USB Keyboard and check if the 'Caps Lock' stays on with this keyboard also.

managed to bring up the onscreen keyborad but it seems not to be active as i cant type anything with it.the caps key is also on on this but cant switch it off.
By the way let me also mention that the comp takes too long to start until i hit any random key then it goes on to display the windows screen.Without that it just stays on the dell logo initialising screen.
Hello,
Try this 1
Try once again the onscreen keyboard. You need to just click on the "Lock" key.
Regarding the starting up issue, when you switch ON your laptop then pres the Tab key. This will show you the POST message. Check if there is any problem in detecting any device.
Good Luck
Hi,
am able to work with the onscreen keyboard but thats just about it.its turned off on caps now but when i switch off the machine, login in again still has the caps on notification on the password.i can by pass this as you had earlier suggested using the shift key.is there a way i can do away wih this at logon?
Sorry to interrupt. @ marrisa2013, what is the result with the external USB Keyboard attached? Problem is apparently not only the keyboard rather some other component causing the computer to operate slower. Do you observe any other symptoms such as computer overheating, which might be causing the computer to get stuck? Moreover, is there any external device attached to the computer such as USB pen driver or Hard Drive.

Thanks for your suggestions.I plugged in a usd keyboard and am able to turn off the caps with that.but its a laptop so any permanent solutions to this??
the comp still doesnt start until i hit one of the keys.
Actually am able to login in with the USB keyboard...I can turn the caps key on and off with the USB keyboard .what causes the problem with the built in keyboard?i can't move around with the external keyboard
I am sorry if I was not clear in my previous response. I intend to ask you, does the caps lock light on the USB keyboard behave similarly at startup like the built-in keyboard? If the light on the USB keyboard is normal the problem is specific to the laptop and I will suggest you further troubleshooting.

As you have run the Diagnostics and all the tests have passed and the external keyboard works fine in all cases, this indicates the keyboard controller on the motherboard is good but there is some physical problem with the keyboard. In this case the built-in laptop keyboard needs to be replaced.
