Hi marrisa2013,

Run Dell 32-bit Diagnostics on the computer. Click here to find steps on how to run Dell 32-bit Diagnostics. This will isolate the problem as Hardware or Software. If the Diagnostics returns any error code(s), please add the same in your reply.

Hello,

Permit me to add few lines.

Try this 1

First make sure that "Caps Lock" key isn't stuck down.

If you are having a problem in logging in because of the Caps Lock in ON State

then hold the "Shift" key and type the password. Holding the "Shift" key will

make the Capital letter to Small letter when the Caps Lock is ON.

Also make sure that you release the Shift key when typing numbers (if your

password contains numbers). Otherwise, it would be typing the characters like !

@ etc

Good Luck

Hi,

Thank you jack4rall, you identified the point of failure indeed.

@ marrisa2013 there could be an actual issue with the keyboard, to isolate try using an external USB Keyboard and check if the 'Caps Lock' stays on with this keyboard also.

As I said, you need to make sure that "Caps Lock" key isn't stuck down or

the dust below the key is making the functionality unresponsive when you are

pressing it. Try blowing compressed air around that key.

If you still having a problem in Turning Off Caps Lock using that key then

after logging into your account, follow the below instructions.

Click on Start --> Run --> Type osk and press Enter.

"Onscreen Keyboard" will be opened.

Click on the key named "Lock" which is nothing but the Caps Lock key.

This should Turn Off Caps Lock. You can notice at the Caps Lock indicator on

your laptop or open a notepad and type anything. You should be able to type

in lower case letters.

Now try logging into your account without holding the "Shift" key this time.

Good Luck

Hi jack4rall,

managed to bring up the onscreen keyborad but it seems not to be active as i cant type anything with it.the caps key is also on on this but cant switch it off.

By the way let me also mention that the comp takes too long to start until i hit any random key then it goes on to display the windows screen.Without that it just stays on the dell logo initialising screen.

regards..

Hello,
Try this 1
Try once again the onscreen keyboard. You need to just click on the "Lock" key.
Regarding the starting up issue, when you switch ON your laptop then pres the Tab key. This will show you the POST message. Check if there is any problem in detecting any device.
Good Luck

Hi,

Sorry to interrupt. @ marrisa2013, what is the result with the external USB Keyboard attached? Problem is apparently not only the keyboard rather some other component causing the computer to operate slower. Do you observe any other symptoms such as computer overheating, which might be causing the computer to get stuck? Moreover, is there any external device attached to the computer such as USB pen driver or Hard Drive.

Hi marrisa2013,

With the USB Keyboard connected when you restart the computer, do you see (on the USB Keyboard) the caps lock is on?

Hi marrisa2013,

I am sorry if I was not clear in my previous response. I intend to ask you, does the caps lock light on the USB keyboard behave similarly at startup like the built-in keyboard? If the light on the USB keyboard is normal the problem is specific to the laptop and I will suggest you further troubleshooting.

Hi marrisa2013,

As you have run the Diagnostics and all the tests have passed and the external keyboard works fine in all cases, this indicates the keyboard controller on the motherboard is good but there is some physical problem with the keyboard. In this case the built-in laptop keyboard needs to be replaced.
