It's possible the hard disk has failed. But, if it hasn't you could remove the hard disk. Put it in a USB adapter and access the data from another computer. A local repair shop should be able to sell you the adapter and remove the drive for under $50.
I know it's too late. But, you should have been emailing yourself copies of the thesis on a regular basis. That way you would only have lost a day or two of work.
