Greetings Helpme, Lord Kieferschild and Mark,
Please, if I may intervene...
Helpme, if you boot your lappy in safe mode, tapping F8 and select with networking, do you get your browser to work?
If it works, some virus got into your lappy. There are ways to crush those viruses with which we can prescribe a remedy.
Let us know.
Regards

I ran malware and moved a few threats to the vault but that still hasn't made my browser work. What else can I do? Is it fixable or do I just need a new laptop?

I turned my laptop off by pushing the power off button not using shutdown so that when I turned it on I had the option of safe mode or starting normally. I chose the safe mode with networking like you suggested I don't understand f8 when I push it nothing happens.

I suggest you try to restore your XP to a date prior to the beginning of the issue, you will not lose any data.

Signing out for a few hours
Did we manage to get in to safe mode?
turn your laptop off.
when you turn it on repeatedly press the F8 Key at the top of your numbers.
Tap the key over and over, don't hold it down.
select Safe Mode with Networking

Good news! You will never get chicken pox again. (But someday, shingles)
Try this:
For IE though, go to tools, internet options, connections, LAN settings, and uncheck "Use a proxy server..."

When you went in to safe mode did you select SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING. normally safe mode will not do im afraid.

When I did this the black box after I hit enter it said 'the requested operation requires elevation
I restarted anyway but the browser still won't load. Any more ideas? :(
Just a reminder I am on vista on a Sony vio laptop.
