Hi all,

For 4 days now I have not been able to use my browsers chrome or Internet explorer. I am connected to the Internet but when I open my browsers it says this web page is not available.
I have tried turning everything off and that doesn't work. My dads laptop works fine on the sky Internet it's just my laptop that won't load. I have a Sony vio and its windows xp.
Please please can someone help me. I am not very good with the tech and am really struggling. Many thanks

Set a network location. Vista is famous for this. If you have not set a network location: IE home, public or work, it won't let you, the firewall is shut down!

Hello,

can you please go to Start > Control Panel > Internet Options

select the "Advanced" tab and select restore advanced settings and then reset.

Try internet explorer now.

Greetings Helpme, Lord Kieferschild and Mark,

Please, if I may intervene...

Helpme, if you boot your lappy in safe mode, tapping F8 and select with networking, do you get your browser to work?

If it works, some virus got into your lappy. There are ways to crush those viruses with which we can prescribe a remedy.

Let us know.

Regards

I ran malware and moved a few threats to the vault but that still hasn't made my browser work. What else can I do? Is it fixable or do I just need a new laptop?

I turned my laptop off by pushing the power off button not using shutdown so that when I turned it on I had the option of safe mode or starting normally. I chose the safe mode with networking like you suggested I don't understand f8 when I push it nothing happens.

I suggest you try to restore your XP to a date prior to the beginning of the issue, you will not lose any data.

Of course

Click on start
Programmes

Click on tools and select system restore a window will open

Restore to a previous time should already be checked, click on next
On the left hand side, you will see a calendar, the dates in bold are restore points, if there are none, go back to March, select a date in bold by clicking on it (Ensure it is a date before the issue)

Click on next and restoration will begin.

Restart you system

Good luck

Sorry about that Chief, lost my head for a moment. (Vista, you poor soul)

See this article

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows?ui=en-US&rs=en-001&ad=US

Under the heading "Easy to use"

Ensure to pick a date prior to the issue.

Good luck and God Save the Queen!

Did we manage to get in to safe mode?

turn your laptop off.

when you turn it on repeatedly press the F8 Key at the top of your numbers.

Tap the key over and over, don't hold it down.

select Safe Mode with Networking

Good news! You will never get chicken pox again. (But someday, shingles)

Try this:

For IE though, go to tools, internet options, connections, LAN settings, and uncheck "Use a proxy server..."

When I did this the black box after I hit enter it said 'the requested operation requires elevation

I restarted anyway but the browser still won't load. Any more ideas? :(
Just a reminder I am on vista on a Sony vio laptop.

ok, right click over the command prompt, and run as administrator. You need to know the password.
