Windows Explorer will not run at all

Toshiba Satellite x64 Windows 7 laptop: After Windows startup screen goes black with moving cursor. Task manager works, so initiated virus scans from there; program windows normal. If I reboot in "Safe Mode," get an error message that "Windows Explorer did not start." Nothing on screen but the "Safe Mode" corners. Have tried everything I know. Am totally flummoxed. Ideas?

Hello,

what happens if, from task manager you go to file > run > explorer.exe ?

Tried that... just pops up in running "processes" for a moment then disappears immediately.

Can run all programs normally through Task Manager... just no Windows Explorer (so no Desktop or Task Bar.) Ran Belarc Advisor; appear to have several updates (esp. Adobe) that failed.

From task manager can you go to run > MSCONFIG press OK.

click on startup and uncheck everything and apply.

go to services and click hide all microsoft services and uncheck them all and apply then restart.

Did as you suggested... on the "apply" would hang up and "program not responding" message. Restarted in Safe Mode and followed procedure, concluded okay; restarted, no change in status. Black screen, no desktop or taskbar, but all programs (including this browser) run via Task Manager normally. Any other ideas I can try?

Guess I misdiagnosed the issue: Followed your instructions, then when I checked "processes" in Task Manager, showed that Windows Explorer was running... stopped and restarted... not change in black screen with cursor. Can do everything except pull up my desktop, although I can access in by browsing from Task Manager. ???

Did you disable all third party services and startup items and restart your computer in normal mode? may be worth waiting for the "Not responding" to start responding.
Yes... have restarted in every mode. Reinstalling Windows my only recourse?
