If you are making a direct RJ-45 IP connection from aptop to laptop, you need a workgroup hub and tewo lan cables, or a crossover cable from laptop to laptop.
Lets think of his like a string and two cans. With a straight cable, the two laptops "receivers" are tied together, and the "senders" are tied together. You need a crossover cable to "send to receiver, and receive from sender". Do you see? Like ear to mouth, or mouth to ear.
