Hi Hana White,
Could you tell me the model of your external drive? Enter Disk Management and check if the drive is recognized. Does it have a drive letter and a file format? Have you tried connecting the drive to another PC and with another USB cable? I would try using the Chkdsk /f command from the Command Prompt. It should look like this: Chkdsk D: /f , where D is the drive letter of your external drive.
