I now have sound thanks to Neowin.net per Inronwolve's info below. This worked for me. Thought I would share.
The Gateway 6525GP isn't listed under the 6000 laptop drivers. A default WinXP install detects it as a Realtek (Doh!). I bet this might get other people, since the AC97 drivers also could show up as something else.
