Just got it working. Looked at another thread (with a laptop) and the user, took out the battery, unplugged it, then turned it off for 2 minutes.
I just unplugged the computer (desktop) for 10 minutes. Turned it on, and it was fine . . .. . quite weird I must say. In all my years building/maintaining computers, that's never happened, but glad it was an easy fix.

That was one of my solutions but from your description of the issue, not knowing it was a laptop, it surely pointed to the HD.
