The recovery image stays the same (Win 7). There is a copy of the prior install saved as windows.old. The recovery image/partition is created by the PC manufacturer and is not a supported feature of Windows.
If you install Windows from a retail DVD it's possible to delete the recovery partition if you select the wrong option.
