Hello Lugnut,
Can you tell me, what is the exact message that you see on your screen when receiving the BSOD error? Have you got a Windows CD? If you do, I suggest you to try to boot from it, or if you don't then make a USB bootable device on another computer if you have that option.
One of the options is to restore your laptop to a last known good configuration.
The other is to restart your portable PC in Safe mode, open the Command prompt and to enter the following command:
sfc /scannow
Press enter and wait for the system to be repaired.
