Why wd external hard drive is not detected by s4 mobile?

Hello,
Recently I brought a 500 gb wd external hard drive , when i tried to connect to my Galaxy s4 I can't detect it ,I don't no whats the problem is ....
Please can anybody help me...

does the hard drive have an external power source?

The phone does not provide sufficient power for an external drive.

no it does't have any external power cable, also my mobile have sufficient charge to detect my hdd, but i cant please help me
