External hard drive . .gone coocoo

Hello,

my external hard drive is brand new . . .500gigabyte . .but when i plug it in my cp . . it notify that it is ready to used but doesnt appear? . .in my computer system? . .its gone coocoo . . .what can i do in this sort of problem? . .
