This means you have put the iPod into Recovery Mode.
1. Try holding the off button and home button until it goes black then let go of the buttons as soon as it goes black.
If the problem persists:
2. While the cable and iTunes symbol show, open iTunes and it will say it is in the recovery mode. Press Restore This will delete everything that doesn't need to be in the iPod like the photos and will probably fix the problem if all else fails.
