I recommend doing the following:
1) Go to the manufacturers website (HP/Compaq)
2) Go to the download drivers/support section.
3) Type in the complete make and model of your computer
4) Select Windows XP as your OS
5) Download Sound Card driver(s) from the list.
Once the correct driver is installed, restart your computer and you should not only have sound but you will see the audio icon on your taskbar.
