Your Modem (that supplies the internet) will connect directly to your Netgear Router using a Ethernet Cable. Plug the Ethernet Cable from the Modem directly into the Router's WAN port. Now take an additional Ethernet Cable, plug it into one of the open ports on the router and the other end plug it directly to your desktop computer.
If the reason you were using USB Cable instead of an Ethernet Cable is because you don't have a network adapter installed on your computer, you can always by an USB Ethernet Adapter.
