Reset my PS3

Hello,
I'm trying to reset my PS3, I got to the part where it gives me the options. But, before hand it asks to connect your controller using the usb, and then pressing the ps bottom. I've done that and it excepted it but when I'm trying to go down to the option my controller isn't working. I've tried everything, from trying it again, making sure there isn't any dust or anything, I've changed the usb to the original and back, switched controller EVERYTHING I can think of! Still isn't working, is there another way of factory reset or anything like that? Basically my hard rive has corrupt data and I can't go on the setting menu. Could I take the hard drive out and then factory reset? I'm sorry if I sound so inexperienced, I am very inexperienced haha!
