Did you try using an external USB keyboard?

Thanks Xpcman, yes, that was my final option. I actually went out and purchased one today, it works just fine with my laptop. Do you think I'd be wasting time and money taking the laptop in to be repaired?

It depends on the age or the laptop and your level of satisfaction with it. Also what software you have purchased and wether you can still install it on the new laptop.
See if you can get an estimate for the repair cost and then evaluate the options.
