Hello sydney,
Since you said that the optical drive was working, have you tried to repair your laptop with a repair CD of the operating system that you have? I assume it is Windows. So, if you don't have a repair CD try to make one on a friend's PC, for example, which has the same operating systema that you have. It also has to be designed for the same bits processor, I mean 32 or 64 bits.
If you are able to boot from the CD, then you should be able to enter the Safe mode and enter the following commands followed by Enter:
Bootrec.exe
/fixmbr
/fixboot
/scanos
/rebuildbcd
