Passport Ultra 1TB says it is full

Hello,
bought Passport Ultra 1TB last year. Worked fine until one day said it was full! Pop up window for "delete files" says I can't delete any previous back ups. Made the mistake of reformatting the drive and of course, now it won't work at all.
Is there a fix to get this formatted back so it will work. I have no other back up source and am a writer/journalist so need to have the storage.

It's time to get a new backup drive. You can't trust this drive with any data even if you could get it to work again.
