Im trying to take an old laptop hardrive and put it into my wife's desktop. It has windows 7 and all that on it it, its a hardrive that i used to use. But when I put it into my wife's computer all i get is a message saying that it can't detect an OS and it just keeps rebooting with that message.

Perhaps the old hard drive is not assigned a drive letter by the desktop BIOS.
You need to boot into the BIOS and examine/modify the drive assignments.
Good Luck
