The AHCI or the IDE modes are the mechanisms for operation the ports that your hard drives are connected to. It usually needs to be revised or changed in the BIOS menu of your computer.
Typically the AHCI mode is used to operate with SATA drives and IDE is used to operate with IDE drives. The switching between the two modes also facilitates the OS install in older BIOSes and in case you have more than one operating drive or an SSD.
