Use VPN by Google One: features, countries, on Windows, Mac

Google has many different services to offer, such as web browsing, Gmail, Google Meet, online storage and more. It is now entering in the world of VPN's and has released VPN by Google One. This article will look at the features of the Google One VPN, how it compares to other VPNs and if it is worth getting.

Where is Google VPN available?

The Google One VPN is a VPN that is only available to Android users. This is not a VPN that can be used to protect a Windows PC, a Mac or an iPhone. It is currently available to Android users in Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the US and the UK.

How much does Google VPN cost?

The Google VPN is an add on when you purchase 2TB of storage on Google One. The price for this is either $99 for one year, or $9.99 per month. You cannot purchase the Google VPN separately as a separate subscription and have to purchase storage.

What are the features of the Google VPN?

Although it does feel like an add on for users of Google One, it is a genuine VPN that hides your IP address and your internet activity. That said, there are not actually many features offered by the Google VPN. You can access websites without being tracked, stay anonymous online and protect your online presence. Unlike most VPNs, you cannot use the Google VPN to change your location and access geo-restricted content, which is arguably one of the main appeals of using a VPN for everyday users. The fact that it is currently only available for Android users will ultimately limit its appeal and reach.

Is the Google One VPN trustworthy?

The Google One VPN clients are both open source and independently audited. Google is a well respected and trusted company and their VPN should be similarly trustworthy.

How does Google VPN compare to other VPNs?

As previously mentioned, the Google VPNs list of features is pretty slim compared to most other VPNs. For a quick comparison, ExpressVPN also costs $99 per year, but instead offers many more features: it works on Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android - you can access over 3000 services (and switch location at will). It is arguably better value for money going with another VPN, such as ExpressVPN, SurfShark or NordVPN as these are all dedicated VPN providers. Whilst the offer of 2TB of storage is useful, a dedicated VPN will have much more use than the Google VPN, which can be considered as a functional add-on, for Android users. You can have a look at our dedicated article on the Best VPNs of 2022 for a complete guide to VPNs.
