Laptop boots but screen stays blackClosed

Question

I have a HP Pavilion Dv7 that won't boot properly. When I switch it on it goes through all the normal boot up procedures but then, instead of the log in screen it's black with just the cursor showing. Just turned it off the other night as normal and this was happening when I turned it on in the morning. It's running on Windows Vista and is about 3 years old if that's any help.

Any help much appreciated

Just a bit more info: it's a dv7-1103ea that i bought in january 2009

if you still have the reboot disk I would try that, sounds like your operating system went bye bye... if when it first tries to turn on hit F2, F5 and F7 and see if it will bring you to the boot menu, it if wont even do that then try the disk, insert the cd, shut off the computer and then restart and see what happens
