Mac on Dell monitor Power saving mode

I'm using a Dell p2213 monitor with a vga converter to my mac. I use an ASUS monitor at work with no issues. On the dell, it is continuously going into power saving mode and then seconds later coming back to normal. I can't take it anymore and don't want to have to buy a new monitor.

I've checked the VGA connection and it's not loose.
I've tried shutting down and restarting.

1. the monitor
2. the cable
3. the adapter
4. the computer

Do you have another computer you can use to check the monitor?
