Some programs not opening on a new computer, while others do

Hello,
I just bought a new computer and have spent the last 2-3 days installing all of my usual programs on to it. While for the most part this has been fine (Chrome, utorrent, VLC, a subtitle editor etc.) a few programs either give me errors on start up (CDisplay) or just don't start up at all after initial loading screens (Sigil, Calibre). Obviously I have uninstalled and reinstalled, to no effect.
Any idea what might cause some programs to fail while others work fine?

these programs were probably written for Windows XP.
