I have done exactly as suggested, it has made no difference the preference mail preference General is still empty.

Hi,
"com.apple.mail.plist" is located in a hidden folder. Open Finder and select Go from the menu bar. Hold down the alt key and the Library folder will appear. Then in Preferences, you can deleted the file.
