Hye,
To solve this problem you will have to go on your display properties..
Right Click on desktop and click properties
Then select the second monitor and click extend monitor!
You will see your desktop appears on the second monitor!
You will need to drag the your windows to the second monitor

If you right click your desktop and click personlize, then click screen settings...
1. as purseoneil said, extend desktop!
2. check where your second screen is lined up, if its over your screen you will have to move your mouse up to get to it, if its under... you get the point...
Tip, i have a lenovo thinkpad r61i (i think, permanent marker over the name)
and i have to go to the control panel and click windows mobile center (or so) and then go connect screen...
Shortcut for mobile center is holding down windowsbutton and clicking [X]
