Sofeware program to copy internet seminars

Hello,
i need help. I am trying to find a sofeware program that I can use to record audio and video of program seminars so that I can store the information. Ideallly being able to edit the videos would really be a plus. Camtasia is a good program but current it is way out of my price range. Can anyone recommend a good sofeware that I can use that would allow me to do this. I am new to video editing and the types of video files on the net, so I don't have any idea what formats or types of files are most commonly used or if they can be converted to one that is easy to work with. I appreciate any information that anyone can offer. Thank you.
