The PS3 can only read FAT32 formatted partitions. The maximum size of any file is 4GB in FAT32.
Windows XP can only format FAT 32 partitions of up to 32GB. This link is for a partition program that can format FAT32 up to 500GB - so you will need 3 partitions on your drive:

You might also be able to use this partition manager to get the 3 partitions:
