IF you have a modem or switch with more than one lan port plug a cable to it then to laptop and use internet.

If there is wireless adapter on desktop, you can enable Internet Connection Sharing on desktop and set up ad-hoc wireless connection with laptop to share Internet.
The best way is to get a wireless router to set up wireless network and connect desktop to router with network cable and laptop to router wirelessly, finally both computers can access to Internet and share files.
