I spoke to someone who is an expert in this type of computing and was told to press control/alt/delete together and when the screen comes up it will show 2 boxes - the one that says username you type in administrator and the other box which says password you then leave that blank - hopefully this should sort out the problem but if not then it could be a virus - hope this helps someone.

This must be because of viruses as it happened to my computer as well.

in safe mode

click on start-->run-->regedt32

a registry editor window will be opened in that locate this registry path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

at the right side, find the strings shell & userinit and check the following

shell value data should be
Explorer.exe

userinit value data should be
C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,

Note: there is "," at the end of userinit.exe

If shell and userinit are having different data values then change it as mentioned above

Just double click shell and userinit and enter the data values as

shell value data should be
Explorer.exe

userinit value data should b
C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,
0
