Windows xp: Dell XPS M140

Hello,
I have an Dell xps m140 with xp installed. I am tring to do a system restore with the orginal disks how ever the dvd drive will not play anything when I put something in it spins and i get a disc on my curser but does nothing. I have went into the regret and deleted a couple of files that some others told me about but to no prevale if anyone has any incite please help.
