Ipod touch wont turn on at all

Hello,

My gf just recently bought a used ipod touch 2g 32gb. I have no idea if its ever been jailbroken but its not turning on at all just a blank screen. I cant even tell what the operating system is on the device cause i can't get on it. My iTunes wont even pick it up when its plugged in ( i've tried putting it in DFU mode trust me). The only thing I can come up with is if the cord is ruined. If you have any suggestions that would be great!
