CD/DVD-ROM drive problems

To anyone out there who can help!

I have some problems getting my CD/DVD-ROM drive on my old PC (running Windows XP Home, SP3) to work and need it badly to run some CDs to reload software.

I suspect that drive has stopped working following the installation of a Windows update. However, I do not rule out the possibility that it could be due to the drive being damaged. When I open the tray to insert a CD, it often closes again automatically sometimes causing the CD (or my fingers!) to get stuck in there...

My other CD/DVD-RW drive works, no probs.

When I insert a CD (audio/data) the light will flash and the CD will spin (and roar a bit) and occasionally the time glass and CD icon will appear, but nothing happens. Clicking on the drive in 'My computer', it responds with 'empty drive' and 'insert media' messages. The CDs work, I double-checked them on my laptop.

I have tried to run apps like Microsoft's Fix It that will detect a problem that it cannot fix, however. Following instructions on the boards here hasn't helped me getting anywhere, either.

It puzzles me, though, why there appears to be three drives listed (one for the CD, one for the burner, and one for the DVD) when I open the list in 'my computer' and perhaps this may be a hint to what is causing the problem.
