One reason may be due to excessive heat. This may not allow a processor to perform at its normal frequency. Upgrading your CPU's cooling fan would help to reduce the problem.
Another reason for freezing is not having enough RAM. All you need to do is to upgrade your RAM! Freezes and stalls in a system may also occur when incorrect drivers are installed.
