Need help opening doc file from internet

Hello,
I'm trying to open a doc file from a school website, and it's really important. I tried to open it with wordpad, but all I get is a bunch of random letters and symbols that show up on the program. Is there another program I need to use? I tried adobe but obv. that didn't work.

A doc file is in microsoft Word format.
Download OpenOffice (it's free) from www.openoffice.org
It's a free alternative to Microsoft Office.

TRY THE MICROSOFT WORLD 2007 OR MICROSOFT OFFICE
