Hi guys, had the same issue with my WD. Now here's my catch: when I do all the things you say and click partition, it says: Could not partition due to an Input/Output Error. Anyone of you guys had the same issue? When I hook it up to my PS3 it works flawless, but my mac keeps on giving this message it's really annoying.
I'm having the same issue, except that my drive is 2/3 full of important material! It seems to read in the old slow USB mode, but my mac won't recognize it when plugged into the firewire port. Can anyone help in a way that doesn't involve reformatting and losing all my work? Thanks!

Ask a question
in partitioning your hard drive with this process, does it erase everything? because I have about 750 gigs of stuff on my hard drive and I dont want it deleted by accident in this process.
Hello,
I am having the same problem as Mr.DefCon5 above and am getting this message:
Error reading bootsector: Input/output error
Failed to mount '/dev/rdisk2': Input/output error
NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a
SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows
then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very
important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate
it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g.
/dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation
for more details.
I'm on a Mac Powerbook G4 running Mac OS 10.4.11 and the NTFS-3G driver (and MacFuse)that I downloaded from the Apple site and installed should be able to mount this drive. There are already data on this WD 1TB MyBook drive that are from a PC. I can't access the data at all since the drive is not mounting.
Help would be much appreciated. Many thanks.

Late response, but it may help someone who comes across this post after the fact as I did. I had the same problem. If the WD Smartware icon appears on the desktop open it, then open the DriveUnlock. Enter your password if one was set up and the drive should mount and the icon will appear on the desktop as it should.
Hope this is helpful to someone.

Does anyone have any idea why there are two Firewire ports on the back? Can it be connected to two computers at the same time?
using your wd hd for file exchange between pc and mac is not recommended.
check the western digital website.
Its better to work with more then one partition if u need'm for both systems.

Using Super Duper to clone tou internal HD should fix the problem and provide a fully functioing backup that you can boot to. However your external hd MUST have firwire to do this. It won't work using a USB connection.
